About the Artist

I grew up near Charlotte but ended up in college in Vermont, where the woodworking bug first bit me. That led me back to Western North Carolina to the Crafts Program at Haywood Community College from 1978 to 1980. In 1981, I became a member of the Southern Highlands Craft Guild.

I work alone in my studio near Black Mountain, NC (east of Asheville), first selecting unusual and beautiful woods and then shaping them into the designs I have worked out over the years. The woodworking process is slow and deliberate, so I try to gain efficiency by building several pieces at a time. I love simple, elegant table designs which feature outstanding woods and serve as beautiful, functional art in your home.

As a child, I loved to rock back and forth in a rocking chair on the porch, even though my legs couldn’t touch the floor. I still have that same chair, and it seemed only natural that I would seek to design my own rocking chair as an adult.

My design is a contemporary take on the traditional rocker, with comfortably curving back slats, padded leather seat and laminated runners and crest rail: a functional showpiece.

My tables, stools and rocking chairs are the result of 40 years, more or less, of designing and building furniture and various accessories as a full-time occupation.

Much of my work is commissioned by the customer; my table and stool designs can all be built in woods and dimensions of the customers’ choice. I also sell at a few select craft fairs and galleries, particularly the contemporary craft co-op Ariel in downtown Asheville.
